As the dust settles on the US election, the implications for the UK are becoming clearer.
When Trump kicks off his trade war by raising tariffs, Britain will face a choice.
Do we cosy up to Trump and take the ‘special’ deal that his camp are already reported to be working on?
This would mean, among other things, the devastation of British agriculture in favour of US chlorine chicken and hormone beef.
It would leave us relying for economic growth and defence on a man who might tear up the deal at any moment in a fit of pique. This is the path Farage will be pushing for.
Or do we instead turn to the 27 countries on our doorstep, our reliable allies, the European Union, undo the absurd trade damage of Brexit, and stand together in our common interests?
This is the path that the dithering Labour government must be pushed towards – the only path that makes any sense to take.
The UK has long split the difference between Europe and America, trying to face both ways.
Now the hour draws near when we will be forced to decide.
We say: Reject Trump. Rejoin the EU.
